This hammer
mill is composed of a rotating rotor in which steel blocks are installed. These steel blocks have a hole in one of their ends that are
called hammers.
The rotor has several axes that are passed
through the hammer holes. The shaft is in what is called the cutting chamber.
In this chamber are installed reinforced plates where the material is hit
pushed by the hammers.
When the rotor rotates, the hammers push the
material against these plates and smash it by impact. The rotor of these mills
usually rotates at high speeds of between 400 and 600 r.p.m. which produces
enough force to chop and crush the product achieving size reduction.
Under the rotor a screen is installed to
control the granulometry of the crushed product. The product shall not leave
the crushing chamber until its particles are less than the diameter of the
sieve hole.
Therefore, the mill will make a lot of cuts on
the same element until the pieces get the right size to pass through the sieve
with a wide range easily exchanging crushing for hammers.
